Mahler: Das Lied Von Der Erde Sanderling....

It has been a while since I have listened to this particular version but it is one that I have always really liked. The two soloists are, to me, excellent and the playing is also top rate. It is a very fine interpretation.

Lovely music!
Yes, Mozart is hard to beat IMHO.
This is quite an old recording (1953) but very well remastered and good sound quality. It does have the slightly dull/flat surface, lacking the more airy and brilliant quality of modern recordings. But the quality of playing easily overcomes these minor issues.

It's music I can always return to while wandering off into 20th century (Mompou is one not that well known and should be listened to more often) or Baroque.

Cheers

Swedish mezzo Birgit Finnilä was indeed a very great singer that unfortunately made too few recordings.

Oh, I have heard very good reports of that recording, I didn't realise that you have a copy. Perhaps I should get it too.

As indicated earlier Seán I find it a very fine interpretation; one that is just that little bit different - and in a good way. I would recommend it.

For some inexplicable reason it took me a long time to come to terms with Beethoven's Violin Concerto. I do not know why that was; perhaps it was that long rambling introduction in the first movement. Now it is one of my favourite works! This version by Nathan Milstein (coupled with a wonderful version of the Brahms Violin Concerto) is a beuatiful version to listen to; such a wonderful tone from his instrument!

^^ Fergus, the LVB & Brahms VCs are my favourite two, by some considerable way ahead of all other comers. The Sibelius, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Bruch & Elgar are all wonderful and would be in the next batch, but the former are magnificent edifices of Romanticism...
