I have not listened to Hindmith's music in quite a while. I must put it down for a personal listening project some time.

Mozart: Requiem / Krips....

This recording/performance is definitely of its time and I find it difficult to listen to. The tempi are far too laborious for my taste and there is no forward drive, momentum or drama. The soprano and alto roles are sung by boys, and sung poorly and insipidly. Not one of my favourite versions but still I keep it purely for comparison purposes.

I have more than a dozen versions of the Fifth and Gardiner's recording with this orchestra is my favourite. It is brilliant!

Ludwig van Beethoven
Symphony No. 5 & 6

Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique
John Eliot Gardiner conducting.

The performance of the Fifth is oustanding in every way and is succeeded by a lovely performance of the Sixth.

Joseph Haydn
Symphony No. 93 & 101

Chamber Orchestra of Europe
Claudio Abbado conducting.

These are truly wonderful performances. Abbado and the COE demonstrate everything that is beautiful in these works. What a pity they only recorded 7 instead of the full London cycle.
