Bloomin' Ada!!!! Never without the clues!


I've been reading up on rebuiding Gale 401's. Nice little project for the next few weeks.

BTW, Tower are selling Five Leaves Left and Pink Moon for a fiver each!

Brilliant stuff John, brilliant stuff! BTW it's my favourite Nick album after the first one, of course. I'm fond of Pink Moon but it can be a harrowing listen! Bryter Later I could never, ever get into even though it does have some fabulous songs but it just doesn't gel as a whole...it just smacks (pun not intended!) of commercialism.A fiver each, obviously has to be CD? Still terrific value but don't forget Pink Moon is only just over 28 minutes long...

Also good luck with the Gales and do let us know how you get on...

I get very nostalgic about those old record shops I used to browse in as a kid.

Actually it wasn't that long ago Ivor; Do remember 'Smile'? As far as I know the shop and it's rather unique 'Smile' logo is still there; it's almost opposite the entrance to the George's St. Arcade. I used to have great craic with the owner who was an absolute minefield of info of the musical variety and beyond... One of the very few owners I actually liked visiting along with the lovely people from Road. Funny you should say the above, as only last week I was standing outside a local record shop here in Dundalk that sustained me for longer years than I remember;everything looked almost the same and I tried to imagine what it was like; the various Lp covers that used to adorn the window was a like an avalanche of kaleidoscope colours distorted by time and vague memories;sadly my reverie was rudely interrupted by the sound of people......trying shoes on :-(((((

I do remember Smile and indeed I worked just up the road from it in Castle House for years... however I hadn't realised until after it was gone what a goldmine it was. The few times I went in there all I saw were old tatty and uninteresting releases but that was just bad luck on my part.. it seems I was looking in the wrong part of the shop!

There were quite a few awful shops in the area selling stuff that looked like it had been dragged from skips and I mistakenly thought of Smile as one of those (the shop itself had been home to many tatty owners before Smile). My loss.

This is off thread, but when I read the above I remembered working in Dawson Street at the end of the seventies and spending my lunch hour going from Pat Egan's around the corner to the original Freebird, two Golden Discs in Creation Arcade, a Golden Discs further up in another arcade, Murrays under Captain Americas and Comet in South King Street. There was also a shop for a while on Nassau Street. No wonder I was always broke, (and as lean as a whippet)!

I did exactly the same so you better camouflage the cover shot :-))) BTW I'm still as lean as a whippett :-)))) Also my favourite Golden Disc was the one in Mary St. where Gerry (he's in Tower now) used to work. Remember him?I used to have great craic with him, such a minefield of information and opinions.They always had a bargain section that changed by the week...and it had fantastic hard to find stuff. Ah, bring back the days....

Ah....the sound of ould fellas reminiscing....all we need is a few pints and we are set up!!!
