Have you tried to unplug USB cable and play it on your computer audio only?
That would help in troubleshooting somehow, to make sure if problem is in your computer only, or computer and DAC don't "understand" each other.
Hi cvrle59

Thanks for the suggestion - I think the setup is OK as I play ok using JRIVER.

I meant MQn set-up. I understand that you can play JRiver, but you should be able to play files with MQn on your computer audio. Versions 2 will have kind of static during play, but you should be able to hear music. If you can't do that, you have some other issues, 24 bit, special characters in the name of the file or something else. You need to isolate those from the computer/DAC communication.
Good Luck!

was it you who said the usb was 1.0, don't know if that would affect things as can't do asynch
Hi sbgk

Thank you for your help - here's the output of the Event On Exclusive On section:

all 24 bit, so no go. am doing a 24 bit version that will have 16/44.1 as well, you need 24 bit for everything, I guess you don't have 24/44.1 music, the 24 bit version does 24/96, you could try that.

Hi sbgk

Thanks very much for your help.

I've downloaded a version from folder "mqn 24 96 test" from https://www.dropbox.com/sh/tw9i3e9dkky9j6q/Qe7aL08-jF - not sure if it is the 24 bit version you mention but tried to play a 24bit 96 KHz wav fie and got an error saying MQNControl.exe has stopped responding - exception code c0000005.

the 24 bit test version has worked in the past, not come across that error before, shall try and dig out a diagnostic version, it doesn't play, but will give some diagnostic messages.
