This album of Medieval and Renaissance music (from an Irish ensemble) dates all the way back to 1975 and they were probably the ensemble that turned me in the direction of both this genre of music and, ultimately, Period Performance. I remember being fascinated with both the type and the sound of the instruments that they used.

hi folks... really busy at present, but just dropped by to say that I've been back on a bit of Mozart of late... the Clarinet Concerto (Sabine Mayer/Hans Vonk), Horn Concertos & Quintet (Dennis Brain/ Karajan) & Piano Concerto boxset with Daniel Barenboim on EMI... all good listening...

anyway, I hope everyone's keeping well, and enjoying some great music... I'll see you around in due course..

Nice to have you drop by Jared! I have often wondered about that Sabine Mayer version.

No. 4 was a measured, steady performance as though Walter was considering the music as he was conducting it. No. 6 was an assertive performance that was in no way sentimental.

As much as I admire Abbado Jared, this set is far from my favorite cycle. The Hogwood and Gardiner sets remain unsurpassed for me, but that's just the way I like my Beethoven. HvK/BPO 1962 being the exception.

Symphony No. 2 was a wonderful, powerful and assertive performance! I thought that the Andante of No. 5 was particularly noteworthy along with its final movement .

This was a wonderful set overall and one can only lament the fact that Jansons did not complete the cycle.
