I will of course post my comments on the set once heard Seán. I am curious to hear Harnoncourt's take on Schumann.

The jewel is the Piano Concerto with Martha Argerich, probably the greatest since Lipatti´s.

I had planned to listen to the concertos first Pepe when I get to listen to the set. I made that decision as soon as I noticed that Argerich was playing it.

Martha Argerich makes very few recordings, but surprisingly, she has recorded no less than 5 times the Schumann concerto. Her first one with Rostropovich conducting dates, from 1979 or so, but the Harnoncourt is easily the greatest of all, she plays as if possessed, and Harnoncourt and the superb Chamber Orchestra of Europe are at one with her. This is easily of the greatest piano concerto recordings of the last 25 years.

That is why I got a little excited when I realized that she was the soloist; a definite and unexpected added bonus to the set for me!

Pardon my stupidity, I thought that that was the Beethoven rather than the Schumann set, sorry.

After buying Gardiner's 40 & 41 I just had to get this recording of (perhaps my favourite) the 29th:



Last year Fergus built and dedicated a fabulous thread to Irish composers. I visited it again a couple of weeks ago and then I listened to excerpts from this cd of John Field's Piano Concertos. I liked it and so I bought it:



I have several versions of Dvorák's late symphonies. They are by Szell, Giulini, Jansons and a few by Kubelik. Alas until now I didn't have any recordings of performances of the first five symphonies. I have deliberated, and dithered for too long over this and so finally I bought a set that young Fergus recommended to me some time ago:

That is a fine haul Seán with some wonderful music and music making that should keep you ehthralled for some time.

The Mozart Clarinet Concerto is a work beyond reproach as you already know. I do not know if you are familiar with the chamber music on that CD but if not then you are in for a treat!
Regarding Gardiner's Mozart CDs, I got all that he issued as far as I know and would advise accordingly.

The Field Piano Concertos are not outstandingly brilliant pieces of work. He wrote them more to display his virtuosity but they are still very entertaining. You will probably end up buying the others as well!

I have always liked the Kertesz set of Dvorak Symphonies and I think that he did the earlier ones particularly well.
