Well I thought it about time that I buy another set of Beethoven Symphonies. I also thought I ought to get a new and very different Mahler cycle. I also thought it would be good to get complete Schubert and Brahms cycles, so I considered my options and the fact that I know that have been critical of Zinman in the past and that people I respect (like Fergus) hold him in high regard so I thought why not get the Zinman set, so I did:

Well that certainly is an interesting purchase Seán and one that should keep you out of trouble for a while!!
I have the Beethoven Symphonies, Missa Solemnis and Violin concerto.
I do not have the Brahms but would like to hear those versions.
The only Mahler that I have is M1 which I honestly did not like so will be very interested in your thoughts on that cycle.
I have the Schumann.
I think that I have all of the Strauss.

All of the above with the exception of M1 (which is only one work from many) I thought were very fine recordings so I am sure that you will enjoy them. He tends to be an assertive conductor who can push the orchestra so it may take a while to get your ear accustomed to his style. Probably the best ones to start with when you get the set are your favourite Beethoven symphonies so that you might understand quickly what Zinman is about. Enjoy!

I really like this music and in particular the way Kondrashin handles it. I was particularly pleased to find a 13 LP box set to add to my collection.
