First up tonight, Linda Perhacs' one and only album, Parallelograms, a beautifully understated gem which grows on you with each successive listening.

And then two of Gene Clark's finest, White Light and No Other, two genuinely great albums that demand to be heard and re-heard. The version of Dylan's Tears of Rage - one of my very favourite songs - on White Light is probably the best I've heard, eclipsing even The Band's great version. And whatever was label boss David Geffen thinking when he heard No Other for the first time, venting his fury and disgust on Clark and refusing to promote the album in any way. Songs of the quality of the title track, Strength of Strings and Some Misunderstanding, are simply extraordinary. One of those great albums that you just put on repeat and float away.

No Other is one of those rare Lps where the room becomes the music. A strange but compelling sound that leaves one gasping with wonder. I personally have never heard anything like it and it's extremely difficult to put into words the effect the Lp has on me. Strength of Strings is indeed a case in point. Those heartbreaking vocals sounding like one of those angels in Wim Wenders Wings of Desire. Definitely not of this world......and all the better for it. In fact, like the title, sounding like no other.

Great choice John. Here's another of their Lps I'm rather fond of; it came out initially as a single Lp which didn't do anything for the sound. Thankfully they saw sense and brought out a double Lp edition a short time later. Now that was more like it :)

Earlier today, I listened to two of the late Vic Chestnutt's best albums, West of Rome and Is The Actor Happy? Honest, self-reflective and deeply rewarding music. Despite the cards that life dealt him, he produced a body of work which will endure and will outlast us all.

This is music of such deeply-felt concentrated force that I find it hard to listen to more than an album or two at a time.

The performance of Dying Young on the West of Rome CD, never fails to break my heart:

And his duet on Guilty By Association (from Is The Actor Happy?) with Michael Stipe is deeply, profoundly moving:

If you haven't heard this man's music, I urge you to make his acquaintance.
