Currently listening to CD Review. The Pavel Haas Quartet is very good and the Talich led performance of the excerpt from Dvorak's Ninth is marvellous.
Smetana: String Quartets Nos. 1 & 2
SMETANA: String Quartet No. 1 in E minor 'From My Life'; String Quartet No. 2 in D minor
Pavel Haas Quartet
SUPRAPHON SU41722 (CD)
Vaclav Talich: Special Edition 13
DVORAK: Symphony no.8 in G major, Op.88; Symphony no.9 in E minor, Op.95 “From the New World”
Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Vaclav Talich (conductor)
SUPRAPHON SU-3833-02 (CD)
I really must get more recorded performance of Vaclav Talich and the CPO.

I must listen to my Zinman/Tonhalle Orchestra Strauss recordings and find out what I am missing.
The two Richard Strauss Horn concertos are at either ends of the composer's life Seán; the first was written when he was only 18 and the second towards the end of his life. Both are lyrical works but obviously vary on the maturity scale. Both are a pleasant listen though. Enjoy if you do seek them out.

The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra are an ensemble with a distinctive sound as you know Seán and Talich usually has something interesting to offer so the combination is a winner to start with. I am also a great admirer of the Supraphon label. I would imagine that those forces combined would certainly bring something very interesting to Dvorak.

CD 2 from this set....
The Strauss Don Quixote was not totally top drawer, but good. The Schumann Cello Concerto was a very good performance however.

I had been eagerly awaiting the arrival of this CD….
….so I listened to it almost as soon as I received it. What a delightful collection of works; seven sonatas and one cantata. Musically, they were very pleasant and interesting to listen to. The small ensemble play superbly and the recording is excellent. Warmly recommended!
