You did cross my mind Seán when I picked up the set!

Finishing off this set with Quartets nos. 5 & 6....

Excellent music but advisable to take it in small doses; very intense!

I was there when this recording came out in 1975 or so. Up till then Mahler recordings were not as tidy as we are now used to. The orchestral playing of the NY Philharmonic under Bernstein and LSO under Solti, were competent of course, but the sheer splendor of the Berlin strings and brass under Karajan left us speechless.

I know that he is somewhat out of favour nowadays but it seems to be forgotten how good von Karajan actually was as a conductor.

I do like von Karajan. He was such a GREAT Mahlerite it's such a pity he didn't record all of Gustav Mahler's orchestral works.

He did sign a contract to record the complete cycle Seán, I´m not sure what happened, but what he left is glorious, especially both Ninths.

A great regret indeed.

I am not familiar with the RVW oboe concerto and I have not even heard of James MacMillan; certainly looks interesting Mark!
