Fran wrote:I got the windows 8 audiophile thing working on a memory stick. Lot of hoops to jump thorugh to get it working, but it is now. First track tried would suggest that win 8 running from the memory stick is roughly equal to the 2 PC w7 setup, but more testing required.
It hibernated and came back out OK!!

thats fantastic, i didn't have a suitable drive and with all the install problems i wasn't too excited to try it till some positive feedback came. i have the audiophile install on a macbook pro but it been a reduced version, it is a pain in the ass to change setting as you have to find ways round the usual way. i have no answer for wifi yet either
ordered a couple of usb3 flash drives online, they'll come in handy anyway
keep us posted how you get on

Ah, I'm too late to warn you, Nige, I just found out that my problem with win8-to-go not booting is because I used a USB 3 stick - a Sandisk Extreme Pro 32GB - the one I mentioned available from Pixmania. I got it because it was pretty fast & I needed that but forgot to check about compatibility. Maybe it will boot on a PC that has a USB 3 port - I don't.

thanks for alerting me to this.
it seems that WTG certified drives show up as fixed drives rather than removable, there is a work around:

i recon its going to be a pain in the ass enough without having to do the above as well, so i got cancelling one of the drives the other was a ebay purchase,
i ordered one of the kingston WTG certified drives for my sanity, expensive little bugger. ill have to tie it to a brick so i don't lose it like all the other usb sticks i had.
thanks

So I managed to sort of get wifi running.... But I'm missing a few services to make it all hang together better.
Now I've gone listening again and done some more comparing. I think the wtg on a stick, single box setup does shade it over the 2 box w7 setup. It seems to have a little better resolution, and seems a bit cleaner on the treble. I'm thinking in terms of brushes on cymbals.
Very interesting, more comparison needed.
My usb stick is a SanDisk cruzer edge €25 in pc world.
The system is a bit laggy alright - what would you expect running from a stick - but it works!

Thanks guys, my image copy to USB stick ran overnight & finished OK.
Now to fix the user account problem. Why does every fix in Windows require the downlaod of an ISO in order to extract a single exe from it :( None of this shite in Linux.
Thanks, nige - I'll try something with my USB3 stick seeing as I already have it & it is v. fast so worth a go.
Great work, Fran, you're forging ahead in this & paving the way for the rest of us.

sounds encouraging
how did u get the wifi running?
just want to get my research and my practice in.
i had installs of mac os x on usb 2.0 and 3.0 before and the 2.0 were sluggish thats why i wanted to go usb 3 route also most noticeable for faster installs.
thanks again fran for persevering its no joke installing a 15gb+ install on usb 2.0 when your not sure its going to work must have took several hours

I set up the ad-hoc using my Win7 laptop - I just connect to it on my Win8 laptop.

Yes, wifi is working, and I can see the music library on my main pc, but can't see all the pc on the network. Crucially one of these is the audioPC!
Some of the network discovery services are still turned off, so that's not helping.
See the last post on the thread on computer audiophile, I posted the services to turn on.
John, that iso to fix the uac problem is small.... Not long to download
