Very interesting Darren. I have never heard Barbirolli conducting Brahms so I will be interested to read how you get on with those ones.

These were recorded by EMI around the mid 60´s, when the VPO was under exclusive contract to DECCA. On occasion they also recorded for EMI, like the Kempe Lohengrin, but back then (how times change!) orchestras were territorially guarded by their record companies. The sad thing about the Barbirolli Brahms cycle, is that the recording quality is not very good, especially for the mid 60´s. I can´t recall right now if they were recorded in the Musikverein or in the Sofiensaal were DECCA usually recorded the orchestra, maybe they were recorded in the more problematic Musikverein.
Barbirolli conducts magnificently of course, but it´s a great pity that the sound is not better, there´s even distortion on some tuttis in my copies. There is a Japanese SACD that I haven´t heard, it would be marvelous if they managed to improve the sound.

I'm not aware of anything beyond Vol. 11 (or I would be trying to get it!). The release schedule seems to be pretty irregular.

well chaps, I'm afraid that I've weakened and have been buying again over the past week... a mixture of real bargains I couldn't refuse and recordings I've had on my wish-list for a long time...

LvB's String Trios have been on my list for a very long time now... I'll probably listen to them in conjunction with the Florestan Piano Trios which arrived a couple of days ago... some time around Mid March!!

these three were all in the 99p - £1.40 bracket on Amazon last w/e and fill in useful gaps in my collection...

can't resist Bernarda Fink's voice in this type of repertoire, and this was only £4...

but I'm saving the best till last... this one has been about £34 for the 8 CD set for as long as I can remember, but Amazon have just sold one for £9.99 with free P&P this morning... let's just hope it arrives!!

once again, I think I'm fitted out until Easter.... the listening to new music never seems to stop!!

thanks Fergus... 5 years in now from having started my collection, and I am determined to take some time this year, filling in some of the gaping holes in basic repertoire which still exist... the LvB STs and Dvorak SQs are for me, among these..
