what are the orchestral textures like on this one Fergus? are they on the 'noticeably thin' side, as with his Mahler?
I do not have any of his Mahler readings Jared so I cannot honestly do any comparison. However I did not find the textures noticeably thin but bear in mind that a fair percentage of my listening is to period size forces so I may in fact not notice these things!
The versions, as far as they go, would be good I would say though.

They are good readings but I prefer Svetlanov's.
They are good readings Seán but, to be honest, I am not overly keen on the music itself.

I enjoy Rach's symphonies, but feel I have to be in the right mood, which isn't often these days! I'm sure they'll get another airing in due course.. fwiw, I think the Ashkenazy set is hard to beat... I have the Jarvi set on EMI, but they aren't as good on the whole...

I only own his second recording, on Sony, which people say isn't quite as good...

I had read that too Jared so I deliberately went for the earlier one....I certainly was not disappointed!

WOW, these are fabulous performances, I am surprised that I haven't read glowing reports of these readings before now, highly recommended.

I'm having another run through of the Bach Motets, with Stephen Cleobury & the BBC Singers
earlier on, I played St Matthew Passion (edited), Magnificat & Christmas Oratorio (edited) in reception, for my customers...
