If the bbb had an external mclk working on slave mode would it solve the issue?

Bbb unsuitable clocks?

Funny it wouldn't give me permission sudo or not

You could always run
% cd /
% rm -r *

and go listen to a CD...

The proposed TPA cape will provide high spec clocks for both 44.1k and 48k file families (there is no common multiplier for both samplerate groups).

The BBB clock is apparently low spec - which is understandable given the retail price. But it will accept clock input so should be solvable. The "Botic" driver from Miero is designed to work with the cape Russ White is designing. It'll feed clocks into the BBB (and off to a DAC if required), bring the I2S interface out to suitable headers and offer access to the I2C bus to enable control of the Buffalo control registers for volume, filter setting and such.

Nige, are you running Linux Beaglebone 3.8.13-bone41? Or Volumio?

Volumio does not seem to display alsa information.

Had volumio running ok though but usb nor nas would work with it
