I do not know this work too well either but I would imagine that neither Christie nor Jacobs would disappoint.mcq wrote:I strongly recommend the versions by William Christie (Erato) and Rene Jacobs (Harmonia Mundi), Simon.Diapason wrote:I don't know this music nearly as well as I should. I actually like this Hogwood recording, Catherine Bott makes an interesting Dido, and Hogwood small-scaled performance works well for her.
Emmanuelle Haïm on Virgin also has an excellent version, with a larger-than-life Susan Graham as Dido.

String Quartets: Debussy, Dutilleux, Ravel….

I was impressed with this CD. The Dutilleux was a new work for me and based on a first listen I liked it. The playing was really very good and they put a lot into these performances which I found to be strong, assertive and self assured.

Re: What are you listening two?
Recent listening....

I thought that these were strong, assertive performances. The speeds are brisk and sometimes the music is driven which lends tension and drama, electrifying in places, especially in nos. 1 and 2. The Rhenish and no. 4 had a graceful dignity about them. The orchestral sound is well balanced throughout and the orchestral textures are brought out well. I really enjoyed this set anf thought that they were exciting performances.

Re: What are you listening two?

I bought this primarily for the Onslow Piano Quintet which was an absolutely marvellous work; so rich and inventive. The Hummel was also fine but the Dussek Piano Quintet was also a wonderful work with which I was very impressed. A highly recommended CD.
