What a legacy M-C Alain left behind! Are her recordings of Jehan Alain's music included on this set? I've been meaning to pick those up for years.

I have her playing a complete Bach organ cycle, some Vierne and I think some Widor. She was indeed excellent.

Mullova playing the Beethoven Violin Concerto with Gardiner + ORR....





During my first listen to this CD the term silky smooth came to mind. This sounded like a completely effortless performance from both soloist and orchestra and yet one had the tension and the drama there as well. I thought that it was assertive where it should be and thoughtful and restrained in the relevant areas. Mullova certainly brings a lot to this work with her performance and she is sensitively accompanied by the orchestra. It is a performance of refinement and elegance and a powerful interpretation which has very quickly shot up the hierarchy of my preferences in this work.

Interesting; no JS Bach in there so there would not be much duplication for me.

I'd have a little duplication, but all that classical French music (as opposed the usual French romantic diet) makes this an interesting prospect indeed. I'm not "good" with that music and really need to explore it more. Along with Alain's magnificent music of course (he would have been a colossus if he'd lived).

A close call between lovely Viktoria Mullova and Thomas Zehetmair with Brüggen among period versions. When you listen to Mullova on gut strings her love for period sound is almost palpable. It´s like she is saying: I LOVE THIS MUSIC AND I LOVE MY VIOLIN!!!!!

And here is another artist who really, and I mean -REALLY- loves his craft. Every new Biondi recording is always a step forward, I don´t know how he does it, but he is always better than before, and before was already mighty good, but the playing here is just heavenly. As Markof said of this recording, really, really nice.
