Ah, now this is an old one I picked up for 3 punt in the local charity shop many years ago....and featuring photos I'd never seen before....even to this day!

Pink Floyd One and Two

Pink Floyd "A Nice Pair"
Harvest Records Vinyl LP

A Nice Pair is a compilation album by Pink Floyd, re-issuing their first 2 albums, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and A Saucerful of Secrets in a new gatefold sleeve.
The cover is by the Hipgnosis group, who did many other Pink Floyd covers, and consists of 2 grids of 18 small pictures of proposed but previously unused album cover designs. Several images depict a well-known phrase or saying in the form of a visual pun; for instance, the centre right-hand panel on the front depicts "a fork in the road", while the bottom right represents "a different kettle of fish". Another picture presents two puns on the album title: a nice pear, and an image of a woman's breasts; the latter is censored with a black bar on some copies, while other U.S. copies opted to cover it with a purple and white sticker over the shrink wrap. Initial copies had a picture of a Mr. W. R. Phang's dental surgery on the cover (a genuine business), but Dr. Phang objected because dentists were not allowed to advertise, and the picture was replaced with one of a gargling monk.

I know some of yis will shudder when you see this, but I've always liked it - in fact its my favourite U2 album. Saw a documentary on them last night, was good.... but they nearly all have odd accents now...

....and I thought she was only famous for "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" ?!?!? This is a collection I picked up for a fiver a few years back! Only
listening to it properly now and it's a revelation! Just a pity it's not on my favoured medium :-(

A review:

In 1967 'Ode To Billie Joe' hit the airwaves making drivers pull over and stop so they could pay attention to this strange gripping song. In 1974 Bobbie Gentry recorded 'Another Place, Another Time' for the film 'Macon County Line'. In between lies a career as rich and productive as many three times as long; a career well documented on this cd which gives a real flavour of this woman's remarkable and unique talent.
The rambling narrative of 'Ode To Billie Joe' was originally intended as the b side to the beefier' r'n'b tinged 'Mississippi Delta' but the enigmatic song caught the imagination of America and it became a huge hit in its own right. To this day it sounds fresh and intriguing - a genuine classic. It provided the title for her first album which included 'Mississippi Delta' and the haunting ballad 'I Saw An Angel Die' - both included here ( I could have coped with more from this album, but I mustn't grumble). A more generous selection is included from the 'Delta Sweete' album, a kind of portrait of the deep south including the truly gorgeous 'Morning Glory' and a number of tracks influenced by Donovan or perhaps the Stones at their most fey - Penduli Pendulum (caught between a quadrille and a square dance) , the mock tudor splendour of 'Jessye 'Lisabeth' and the thoughtful 'Refractions'.
All this material was first rate and indeed Ms Gentry continued to produce one stunning song after another. Her craftsmanship and intellectual substance made them never less than interesting and usually totally arresting. 'Casket Vignette' for example gives us an undertaker or his/her assistant trying to sell a casket to a recently bereaved Miss Morgan full of judgemental homilies and lacking any real sympathy. I wonder how much Bobbie Gentry listened to Randy Newman on whose territory she sometimes encroaches. She is certainly adept at the ironical portrait such as 'Billy The Kid' or the understated 'Your Number One Fan' - both from her brilliant final album (well represented here).
The cd leaves one breathless with admiration and somewhat puzzled as to why she is not held in much higher regard. I have not mentioned the superb 'Fancy' or the handful of covers included here like her marvellous erotically charged and slyly humorous version of Bacharach and David's 'I'll Never Fall In Love Again' (More of these are available on the enjoyable 'Ode To Bobbie Gentry' - not as good as this though). This belongs in every openminded cd collection in the land.
