i tested each usb port too. some usb controller shares irq with your audio devices.

you ought to get 3 non optical mice and see how they run, perhaps cut off their leads with a sharp knife
your wife might not like them, but you won't have heard anything like it in your life
I find the treble a bit squeeky

am afraid to find out my keyboard sucks too..
need PC = miceless + keyboardless +ethernetless + wirelessless + GPUless
remap the PC power button, as "Play"
remap the PC restart button, as "Next song"
hold down PC power button as "Shutdown"

i finally get you! i have a gaming mouse pad. it stabilizes the mouse sensitivity.
if i use that mouse on a wooden surface, yes, treble sounds a little out of control.

EDIT
tested difference surfaces. the smoother/more accurate is the micro-movement of the mouse pointer, the better is the treble.
find a piece of plastic, a little soft, black, sticky, sounds best, as though i have unplugged the mouse.
