I use a Microgroove plus that has been specifically set for my cart.

A Tom Evans Phono stage has to be matched to the cartridge for optimum performance, this is done at the factory, normally you specify your cart when buying and the Black box arrives set to match.
If you change your cart you send the box back to the factory with the new specifications, this service is FOC. (Better recheck that, it's been a few years since I looked) but all I paid was P&P to have it reconfigured to my New Cart back then.

As far as I know mine was matched to the cart, they were bought together on that basis. I may ring Tom and ask his advice, I'm told he's very approachable like that.

Whatever the technical explanation Derek, the sound from your LP replay system is the best I have heard in a very long time. Absolutely trashes the LP12/Ittok/Asak/NAC42S......

Agreed - vinyl replay in dereks is excellent.....

Before spending the dough, I would check with tom Evans - could save a lot of $$.

But going out on a limb here and just based.on personal experience, I would keep your phonostage and change the cart. I just think mc sounds better than mm but I know davef's.mm does sound good.....

I'm actually considering a move to a high end MC but gosh some of the prices are silly indeed.

A sticker on the back of the unit states "2.5-mV " which matches the Sumiko Blue point. That said I may still get Tom to look over it.

I think it would be wortwhile - or at least talk to him and tell him what you heard, and did he think that it should sound like that, Wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility that it needs a tweak.

The 2.5mV sounds about right though, and chances are the loading is set correctly then as well. The other option is that he may be able to do some upgrades to it for smallish $$

That's my thinking too.

well the Einstein is now living with me and he plans to stay 10 days at least... all concerned agree it takes a week just to warm up properly. That said, even 'out of the box' (well a gorgeous wooden crate actually!) it sounds pretty impressive. Ok it's metallic, edgy, sterile and hollow but you can hear the bones of a great amp in there. Detail, darkness and dynamics are, even now, incredible. This should be very VERY impressive in a week!
