Ken Moreland wrote:What's the power output of your new amp? I don't think the Trio's are hard to drive, although they are reputed to like some power to get going . When your amp is ready bring it down and we'll see.
Data sheet says 56w per channel continuous average at 8 ohms

Not sure in the grand scheme of things what that means
Its plainly obvious the speed has increased i assume because the power is there as demanded
My other amp which is nearly idential bar power sounds a little muddy by comparison too

Is it like my 1.6litre focus versus your 2litre + bmw
Only im running now on nitrous and the engine capacity means little now?

Sure will be interesting to try it
Looking forward to it

The attack portion of sounds (or risetime) is the most important to our perception. It is the main part of the sound that allows us to identify the object from which the sound has emanated. It defines the timbre of instruments. Here's an example of three orchestral instruments with their attack portions removed http://acousticslab.org/psychoacoustics ... ds/4-8.wav - can you identify them? Answers on a postcard please :)

Answer found at the bottom of this page http://acousticslab.org/psychoacoustics ... dule06.htm

The ability of the PS to provide the instantaneous current necessary to achieve realistic risetimes is paramount & not often met by capacitor banks which are refreshed by a rectifier every mains AC cycle.

For Digital Audio playback that delivers WHERE the performers are on stage but more importantly WHY they are there.

It's like two cars having a maximum speed of 50 Watts...
but one will get there faster :)

was just listening to love over gold album
theres some instrumental pieces with fast and slow playing concurrently were the fast playing almost seems faster than heard before but the slow seems normal
the instrument separation and clarity is exceptional so cannot really be wrong

fast bass notes seem to bust out of nowhere

I got the first one of those 3, but not the others. Fairly incredible. Great link as Si says.

i only got the first one
took me ages to see the answers on the page

was thinking about the attack of the sound
its certainly something that has been improved with ps improvements not just the amp though its everywhere throughout the system

gives a sense of realism that's not always as apparent or obvious in studio recordings, but live venue recordings its pretty impressive

the 2sk208/2sk879 is a closer/identical match to the 2sk30atm which is mentioned plenty online in audio circuits

ive tested 2sk880,bf862,MMBF4416 and the 2sk208's in a pass b1 type config as a basic method to test individual jfets for sound quality

to my surprise there wasn't a vast amount of variance in the sound signatures of these jfets i had expected more
my order of preference was the 208's, mmbf4416, 2sk880, then the bf862

the 208's are sweeter sounding than 4416 which has better speed over the 880's that have better clarity, decay and reverb over the bf862 which is good anyway in what normal people would call a hair splitting exercise

Very impressed with Nige's amp yesterday. It's well able hold it's own against the Gamut through both Eists and Trios . It brought an astounding improvement in the Eist's bass. With both sets of speakers any track with enthusiastic drumming was really involving .
Nige doesn't travel light so as well as amp and Eists he brought two dacs, one with XMOS USB to I2S card and the other fed from SD card reader. Both were excellent and the XMOS model had a lively feeling but the SDcard version was tops for clarity.

Glad to get through Friday 13th without frying anything!!!

when Ken said call over friday
i was thinking either he doesn't realise its the 13th
or just not superstitious
or maybe thinks fri 13 is lucky

i always liked the sound in Kens with the sonus fabers and the hugo,
but Ken changed some key components the trio 10's and upgraded to the hugo tt
within a few minutes i realised this was a large improvement over the previous system with instrumental separation, detail and fluidity
im really really impressed with Ken's mostly new system
so much so i was doubting any of my contraptions was going to be in the same league and maybe should leave them in the car:)

we could have done more amp a-b comparisons to be 100% sure but we have a bit of a phobia of switching interconnects over and back like yo yo's
i had priced the tweeters for the trios earlier in the week, i certainly wouldn't like to buy them especially since i wouldn't actually have em
im happy with the way the lifep04 chipamp performed alongside the gamut especially since i hold the gamut 200d in quite high regard

thanks ken for a great day with great sound
