I knew I couldn't trust you guys, trying to get me to spend more money ;)
Since I just spent too much because of Rick, there is no money for a fancy cd reader right now.
I do have an old xp dvd and license I could resurrect, but I really dont feel like going there, I'll probably stick with server R2, and see about running dbpower in core mode.
If I can retire my music PC from playback duties now after I get my SDTrans, then it will become a ripping station only. That will let me play with this more, I won't have to worry about changing it back to a playback PC.

No need to spend any more money!!!
If I get this thing where I want it, as long as you use something similar for a MB and CPU, you can plug it in.
When you get WINDOWS really small it becomes very nonchalant about many things.
My goal is less than 50 mB and at that size you can just copy it onto a drive.
Of course, I would really appreciate you appraising it to keep me from total delusion. I think it will take about two weeks.
Congratulations on your purchase of enjoyment and TIME! I know you are going to be very happy. Every night as I listen to this tiny thing I am filled with gratitude for it and anger at the time I spent chasing the impossible.
I hope what was learned about computers will be useful for the one thing WE HAVE to use the computer - ripping the disk. You brought to the forefront, this is a big part of the process.
I have had these ideas floating in the back of my head for along time and kept hoping all was well, no need to be concerned. It may well be but only one way to know for sure.

Why do you need MEDIA PLAYER at all?
I made an nLite install as described in my post above. You end up, after getting rid of the pagefile with a 255 mB c: folder.
It works just fine. No MEDIA anything or INTERNET EXPLORER. Luckily dBPoweramp stands on its own and does not need any of that stuff.
There are 200 mB of useless .dlls and .exes in my c: folder which I will remove.
I am hesitant to use VHD since I want to keep memory as small as possible but I am intrigued. Seems whatever would be gained from copying to a VHD would be lost when you FINALLY transfer it to a drive.
Forgot where the shell directions are in the registry. Will have to look back. Still having to use cMP to exit EXPLORER. Would be great to eliminate EXPLORER entirely but you would lose the ability to copy from one drive to another.
The choice will be if one wants to be able to copy from one disk to another with the ripping machine or have a pure ripping machine which can do nothing else.
Might make a sonic difference and then again, it might not.
Connected a CD-rom from outside the box with layered damping.
The rips I made last night seem to be a little better still. Thinking that powering with linear supplies might be worth the trouble.
And I thought I had put WINDOWS begind me ...

Was looking past shell in registry.
Can't wait to HEAR if no EXPLORER makes a difference.
Wish this damned job did not get in the way of my audio foolishness ...
I wish I would, at least, TRY running, Nigel.

If you turn the 50-250 mb (whatever size it ends up at) file into a VHD, you could copy the VHD to a USB stick, and then run the vhd out of RAM. Once the os is up and running in ram, you can unplug the stick.
You could also do this with a disk drive, and then turn off the disk drive once the os is running.
With 2 gb of ram, you could have maybe 1.5gb for the vhd, and the other .5gb for system ram. The rest of the vhd would be for saving the rips to. When the vhd is full of ripped files, you could plug in a stick to copy the files to.
So far, my experience with VHDs has been installing the os from scratch to a new VHD. I've never copied an existing OS to a VHD, but there must be a way to do it.

If I could understand WHY?
I worry a minimized install might not allow it anyway. I think htere are files needed for this to work and I have probably already removed them.
I know there are many neat things about doing it that way but not convinced it does not have just as many not so good things, also. Always open to being proved wrong.
Have ordered a H61 board to go with an older CPU and would like to use a 1gB stick of memory with that whih would preclude storing anything in the memory.
Going back to Tony Lauck's post on AA and his concern about SSDs - makes me wonder if I should place the ripped files on a HDD?
Only one way to know ...

If you add a little more ram, and run out of ram, when you're ripping you can turn off the hdd/sdd/usb stick, and only need to use ram in your pc.
The question is, does noise generated from a hdd or some type of flash based memory degrade the rips?
It becomes a trade off of more ram (and also more work to make the os run out of ram) versus having a hdd or sdd or usb but a smaller amount of ram.

Randy,
I thought the idea was to load the rip onto the memory itself?
I see no real advantage whatever in holding the OS in the memory. I think when the OS gets really small it ends up in the memory anyway. Everything left in the c:folder is needed - there is very little back and forth (in my conception of how it all works)
I could see there being something to ripping to the memory. But worry the whole idea of doing that gets subverted as soon as you move the file to a SSD or HDD. I feel certain I am missing something/more than something.
So I come back to there being only what is needed for the OS to insure a calmer environment.
I look forward to having something to send you (and Nigel if he will try it) for your opinion(s).
