Lovely creative writing by Jim McNeely and terrific delivery by the VJO, all compositions except for the title track were wrtten by McNeely:

I caught these on lyric FM once and thought they were brilliant. Apparently, they were a street band but made the big time with this album, which was nominated for the 2008 Mercury prize. They use the alto sax a lot (sounding almost like a clarinet) and instruments called "hang drums" - a swiss invention which sounds like a carribean steel drum.

Fran, mention of the Newport Jazz Festival brings to mind the sensational Duke Ellington Orchestra's concert in 1956 at Newport and the way in which they took over the place. Their performance of Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue was a sensation. Paul Gonsalves solo almost caused a riot and put Duke's picture on the front page of Time Magazine. The CD is well worth having. Gonsalves solo is amazing after a few listens it is set to memory.

I picked this up a few weeks back and only getting to listen to it now....

Very smooth jazz, might not be everyones taste but its a superb pressing.
