This is for me, and always has been a troubling, menacing and enigmatic work. My problem is that of all of Mahler’s symphonies this is the one that I still do not comprehend or truly get to grips with. I do not see it as light hearted, quirky or full of fun (I do see elements there). To me it is a dark and sinister work. It has always been a challenge for me and continues to be so unfortunately.

quite by chance, the BBC Music Mag's 'Building a Library' for February, concentrates on Mahler 7!

Recording of Choice:

Bernstein/ New York Phil (1966) Sony

2nd-4th:

Abbado/ Berlin (2002) DG
Tennstedt/ LPO (1980) BBC Legends
Macal/ Czech Phil (2009) Exton

One to avoid:

Rattle/ CBSO EMI

Make of that selection what you will....

Interesting, as Rattle was the BAL choice soon after it came out. But then that's what we expect from BAL: the top choice last time is either dismissed rapidly or not mentioned at all! Bernstein and Abbado are excellnet, I must pull out my BBC Legends Tennstedt and listen to it again. I can't remember ever hearing of the Macal before, I must investigate further.

Does this mean that M7 is going to feature in BAL on CD Review?

Sorry Ciaran, I don't have January's to hand, but February's are:

2nd: Walton No.1
9th: Brahms Piano Trio in B major
16th: Mahler No.6
23rd Mozart: Divertimento for String Trio K.563

hope that helps...

Well, I imagine the presence of M6 on 16 February says they're not doing M7 any time soon! Thanks Jared!

I'm interested to see K 563 there as it's a favourite work, but I wouldn't have thought there would be many versions to consider!

Oooh the M6, wonderful! That's an interesting selection for February.
