Seán wrote:I thoroughly enjoyed these recordings on CD Review earlier today:

Monteverdi Madrigali Volume 2: Mantova
MONTEVERDI: Quatro Libro (1603); Quinto Libro (1605); Sesto Libro (1614)
Les Arts Florissants, Paul Agnew (conductor)
LES ARTS FLORISSANTS EDITIONS AF003 (CD)

I was keen to hear this Seán so I had a listen on the playback facility tonight; very nice indeed!

To be honest it is not music that I would spend a lot of time listening to but I was enchanted by that performance on Saturday, it is beautiful.

This is simply magical.  Philippe Herreweghe's recent version of Haydn's Die Jahreszeiten is just breathtaking in the sense of life-affirming wonder that it evokes.  Grace and beauty harnessed with the refined delicacy that we expect from this master conductor.  Very highly recommended.

The music of Monteverdi has many hidden treasures Seán but it does require a little bit of work initially.

I will keep that one in mind for a little project that I have coming up.

This evening I took a wee break from Mozart:

Johann Sebastian Bach
English Suites, BWV 806-11

András Schiff piano

It really is impossible to describe just how lovely this performance is.

How does it compare with the Gardiner? That´s still my favorite.

A great way to start 2015. Domenico Gizzi was another famous castrato, and we get a sample of arias written for him by Leonardo Vinci, Alessandro Scarlatti, Francesco Feo, Domenico Sarro and Giovanni Bononcini.
Roberta Invernizzi as usual is spectacular and she receives exquisite support from I Turchini.
