My listening habits over the festive season have been limited to Bach and Mozart, with performances mainly led by Gardiner and Abbado respectively: no Jazz or Beethoven either for that matter.
Gardiner's Bach is really extraordinary.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL from me too.
Dear Claudio Abbado is a great loss. I am listening to Orchestra Mozart performing symphonies 35, 29 & 34 as I type: BLISS!

I know that I have gone on for a loonnggg time about Gardiner's Bach but for those new to or wanting to explore JS Bach's music it cannot be over-emphasized how good Gardiner is in this field! Glad that you enjoyed it Simon.
You have indeed ploughed a lonely furrow, but your efforts have borne fruit in this young man's behaviour, thank you sir.

Heh, my admiration for Gardiner certainly pre-dates the forum (I remember explaining in music class in school why he was my favourite conductor) but Fergus's efforts have only solidified my opinion and ensured that I buy and listen to even more music. This forum is a wonderful place for musical encouragement!

English Renaissance polyphony is certainly not repertoire that I would associate Gardiner with but this selection of works performed with his usual passionate vigour was a wonderful surprise and I hope that he will return to this great music in due course. I would also recommend Herreweghe's more restrained and understated performance of works by William Byrd. Certainly, two of my favourite discs of 2014.

A recent purchase: Brahms - Violin Concerto....
....which I enjoyed, but it is difficult not to like Oistrakh's playing I think.
