Finishing off a R Strauss day with this one....

With very fine singing by Norman and very sensitive orchestral accompaniments this always makes for a wonderful listen to this beautiful music.

Shostakovich's String Quartets should be in every collection along with the Beethoven Quartets. They are both obviously from different eras but are both equally important in the history of music IMHO.
I hear you Fergus, believe me I do.

I've been massively enjoying this wonderful SACD: I keep coming back to it:

Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn songs with Michael Volle and Christiane Oelze and the Colgne Gürzenich Orchestra conducted by Markus Stenz. There is an enthusiastic review of it in this month's International Record Review which also has a very enthusiastic review of the same team (minus Volle) performing Mahler 4. I see that they've also recorded the 5th symphony and that a cycle is planned. I will be acquiring 4 and 5 shortly. IRR also give the thumbs up to Philippe Herreweghe's new Mahler 4 with Rosemary Joshua and the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées.

I liked these two performances; not the best that I have heard but good nonetheless.
