The trio of Rain Dogs, Swordfishtrombones and Franks Wild Years is essential. Swordfishtrombones caused a lot of muso friends to rethink everything they thought they knew about music. One mate listened to nothing else but it for about 3 months. Big Time is a live album from the same period. Wonderfully mad.

More good stuff from Tom Waits. I have already Closing Time, ..Saturday Night, Small Change, Orphans, Raindogs, Glitter and Doom. Any suggestions on what to get next? I had my eye on Mule Variations and the Frank Wild Years.
I have both on vinyl and I can definitely recommend 'Mule.....'brilliant sound and wonderful music; it was a quick listen the other day that persuaded me not to get the box set, funny enough!! As for 'Franks.....' I genuinely can't remember what it is like but I'm sure somebody out there can tell you all about it's merits or not! All I can say is if I can't remember it then it mustn't be that hot....

thanks lads. Frank Wild Years contains a few tracks that frightened the hell out of me when I first listened to Tom Waits on 'The Island Years' record. I never heard anything like it before. I wonder how I'd get on with it now though as I've taken to a lot of his other releases in the meantime.

This is one of my favourite Tom Waits records. It has the track 'Jersey Girl' covered by Springsteen. It also has the haunting
' On the Nickel '. One of his most accessible records.

my listening over the past few nights...

'Axis...' has the better production and sound overall but I think they've probably cleaned up '..Experienced' a good bit too as it sounded a lot better than the old cd version I have. I think 'Band of Gypsys' will be purchased soon!

Thanks for your welcome observations on two classic albums! God, I envy you as you start your Hendrix journey..
BTW after you've sampled the single Lp 'Band of...' you should definitely try and get the triple
Lp version of the rest of the material performed on the two nights including two stunning
renditions of 'Machine Gun'. For some that's maybe one version too many - everyone to their own I suppose....
