Re: Electronica sampler Vol. 3 :-

I'm currently working on an Outer Limits/Weird/Noise compilation from my Lp collection but this time only to fit on an 80 minute CD as I feel 3-8 hours of this kind of music might have some of you running screaming somewhere....with pitchforks and God knows what else :) Anyway you'll be relieved to know that'll be yer lot. Thank you and good night....

Finished it today and with some judicious editing managed to get it just so;it's the most personal of the lot as it felt more like making up a C90 (remember them?).Then I remembered I forgot to include material from Svarte Griener and his ilk. So....I've decided to devote the last disc (6 and counting!) to the man himself and one or two others....

Its a bit of an oldie, but the last track (Caramel prisoner) sounds great on 801's

Whew! Glad to hear that :-) A quick recap of what's on the discs:

1. Classical/Ambient from one artist (Olafur Arnalds).Start listening to Found Songs first...

2. More challenging stuff on this disc from Lp download vouchers plus another Classical Ambient outing (Max Richter)

3. Devoted to the old school guys eg Schulze,Roach etc etc

4. A massive(!) trawl through the new school stuff from the likes of Isan, Murcof etc etc These were only meant for personal
listening so they're completely unedited with very low bit rates and probably run-out clicks too :-)

5.A more personal selection that I recorded especially from my LP collection especially for this project. I managed to pull off a nice touch with some careful editing (and from memory!) and I've already told Dave that it has to be copied in the same order on the master disc otherwise the effect will be ruined...especially if iTunes is used.

6. This one is devoted to the Dark Ambient genre of Svarte Greiner's amazing music and location stuff from BJ Nelson.Great stuff for Haloween too :-)

So that's it! I hope it'll open your mind to the wonderful alternative world of Electronic music and all it's weird offshoots :-)

BTW while recording one of Svarte Greiners Lps (Knive) I laughed when I spotted a scribed messaged on the run-out groove:
"F###ing Hell!" You've been warned :-)

Electronica is not usually my bag, man but I heard the tail end of a song by an Irish band on Tom Dunne's radio program - "Highgate Hill" by "Electric Penguins" http://breakingtunes.com/electricpenguins

Has anybody heard them or of them before?

They are in Busy Feet & Coco Cafe 41/42 Sth William St. on Sep 25th at 20:00 - I'm thinking of a visit

Olafur Arnalds – Found Songs....

Image

There is some really hauntingly beautiful music on this disc....but not an awful lot of it. However, I suppose it is better to have really liked what one has heard and be left wanting more than to have been disappointed.

I will post this in the Classical Music section to alert people to the quality of this fine music!

I can't quite believe it but I'm actually enjoying this slowly evolving soundtrack.Just on the right side of the dreaded New Age crap, only just..... Now if only he got the sound of the piano right....or is it a keyboard? Very hard to tell...

Press:

I first saw Moon with my son Jonny at an art cinema in the West End of London just after its release. We anticipated something different from the average sci-fi movie and got it. Moon is a wonderfully restrained film, holding back when others may have been tempted into the sensational. Duncan Jones' story is a moral fable, gently told, effortlessly enacted, depicted with a beautiful starkness. Sam Rockwell is not an obvious choice for a lead maybe, but in his casting is a further understatement that makes this piece so engaging. Mirroring this is big Hollywood star Kevin Stacey's part as the voice of the computer - we never see him (obviously)! The soundtrack - again, superbly restrained, by Clint Mansell - is exquisite in riding with the mounting waves of gently disturbing tension as the revelation sinks in. If you liked 2001, the original Solaris, and Dark Star, you might like this...

This is a rare thing indeed - a science fiction film (y'know, like a proper one!) and an accompanying soundtrack that successfully enhances the film rather than just sitting alongside it. I must admit to having given up on finding great new Sci-Fi scores in film, Clint Mansell's score is predictably sparse but surprisingly robust on repeated listens. It compliments the film perfectly and if you dig a little deeper, begins to throw up subtle changes in the few recognisable cues that emerge from the movie. Special mention goes to the track 'Memories...' - it is a wonderfully affecting piece of music, containing nowt much but an ethereal piano, before a Cello moves in by way of a final refrain. My favourite track on the album. In short, if you're a fan of the scores that accompany the classics that 'Moon' was unashamedly trying to emulate, you'll love this.
