Bruckner: Symphony No. 8 with BPO/von Karajan....

I love Russian performances of music by Russian composers and I have long felt that Svetlanov excels in that repertoire, alas I am not familiar with Kalinnikov's music at all, one for the wish list perhaps.fergus wrote:Kalinnikov: Symphony No. 2 played by the State Symphony Orchestra of the USSR under Svetlanov....
A composer whose music I do not know other than this delightful work.
Do you like it?fergus wrote:The evocative music of Debussy; Images, Jeux and Musique pour "Le Roi Lear"....
Yes I did Seán. It was not as overtly sensuous a performance as other performances of Debussy’s music that I have heard; some might say that it was somewhat restrained but that is perhaps what appealed to me in this case.Seán wrote:Do you like it?fergus wrote:The evocative music of Debussy; Images, Jeux and Musique pour "Le Roi Lear"....
Seán wrote:
Ludwig van Beethoven
Symphony No. 9
Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich
Steve Davislim tenor, Birgit Remmert soprano, Ruth Ziesak contralto, Detlef Roth bass
David Zinman conducting
Hi Fergus, not at first, no, but overall, yes I did. I was unsure at first because of the light sound of the strings, the fast tempo and lack of depth, if that makes sense? It certainly is very different from any others I've heard, so that, in itself makes it very interesting. It isn't my favourite, far from it, von Karajan's 1962 recording with the BPO fits the bill. Perhaps I should listen to all my recordings and discover which one takes pride of place in my affections.fergus wrote:Seán wrote:

What about that one Seán, did you enjoy this 9th?
