Calace – Mandolin Concertos 1 & 2....



I bought this disc many months ago as I have an interest in the mandolin (having played it, poorly, in a former Life). I am always anxious to pick up music for this instrument and eagerly grabbed this one.
However, on first listen, I was bitterly disappointed. Stupidly, in my eagerness to buy, I did not read the cover properly and instead of getting a symphonic delight I got a mandolin and piano duet....which is exactly what the composer wrote.
I listened again with different expectations and said to myself “consider them as two Grand Sonatas”. Job done and I enjoyed what I heard. I would still love to hear this stuff orchestrated though.

Not that time, no, although I certainly considered it. Those trio sonatas are actually really hard to play, and I was nervous enough already!!

But I really enjoy this every now and then ....

The Symphony of Sorrowful Songs is a truly wonderful work indeed.
