Finding unprotected LiFePo4 batteries in the 26650 2300m range in the places I'm looking at (budget not good so Asian discount stores) is proving difficult.
Instead I've ordered several AA size batteries (unprotected Soshine AA/14500 3.2V 700mAh Rechargeable LiFePO4 Batteries) and will be using a parallel battery holder case to connect 3 or 4 together to give extra capacity.
Just to give me an rough idea, anyone know approximately how many hours a 2300 mAh battery will last (in the Regen) before requiring recharging? I used an online battery calculator and (from memory) it stated approx 30 hours with a 50 mA draw - does this sound right in real life?

I guess the protection cct design is similar for both Li-ion and LiFePo4 batteries (other than the different voltage requirements between the two) so ideally I should be looking for a non protected LiFePo4 battery.
I don't know what country you live in but do a search for "26650 LifePO4" & get the ones with metal tabs welded to each end of the battery otherwise it's very difficult to solder a wire to the battery ends.

It's just a matter of dividing the battery capacity 2300mAh by the current draw 50mA which gives about 46 hours for full depletion so 30 hours sounds about right for 75% discharge - keeping the battery at 3.3V output

Rick has slightly misunderstood me. I am much misunderstood, but in this case am quite clear - jkeny is absolutely right! As he always is.
Bit off the Regen thread but I have tried a 3S 11.4V (nominal) LiPo battery in parallel with my Maplin XM21M Linear PSU - supply 12V float charged by the XM21 to my Mitac PD10-BI Mini-ATX board.
Having charged the LiPo with a proper LiPo charger thereby balancing the three cells inside, the Linear is all that is needed to keep it at 12V and hopefully balanced internally. SO no balancing circuitry is used when playing. I will take the battery offline for charging/balancing occasionally.
My point to Rick is that multi-celled LiPo batteries with a balancing lead - as used in RC cars/planes - do not have any circuitry inside them. The balancing lead is soldered to the cells in the same way as the discharge lead. The LiPo chargers have all the clever balancing and charging intelligence; so if you don't leave the charger attached, no sound infecting circuitry is employed.
The improvement in SQ with the LiPo is material.

Apologies if I missed it, but is there a simple circuit, or better still a commercial power supply, that would be suitable for using with the batteries?

Intona is the "cake" and the battery powered regen is just the "icing on the cake".

Great: I have both and certainly the Intona easily outperformed the wall wart powered regen.
