Its a fantastic set Fergus. Well over 3 hours of music in it. The Takacs Quartet manage to combine a rawness and beauty in their playing of these works like no other Quartet that Ive heard to date. Not too smooth, but not overly clinical either. Highly recommended. If you have the Bartok set you'll know what to expect.

That's a magnificent set of music, Fergus, and is - arguably - Reinhard Goebel's greatest achievement along with his Bach recordings which remain unsurpassed.

Brahms – Symphony No. 3....

The sleeve notes for this work say “This, his [Toscanini’s] final statement of the music, is by considerable margin, the broadest , the most deliberate of all [his versions].”
This version of Brahms’ third symphony is indeed a measured affair as far as the inner movements are concerned but there is certainly nothing lacking in the outer movements and I would certainly be interested in hearing an up-beat Toscanini version of this work!!

It took me a long time to get this set but it certainly was worth the wait....the playing and presentation was superb as one would expect from MAK. This set is truly a welcome addition to my collection!
