I have installed W8.1 and can't use MQn at all. SBGK please take look at console error (tested on different versions of mqnplay/control):

Code: Select all

'paste' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
The system cannot find the file File1.txt.
Could Not Find C:\WINDOWS\system32\File1.txt
Playback commenced - 12:08:33

'MQncontrol' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
Press any key to continue . . .
All drivers installed, PlayPcmWin64 works same as Foobar. I use disk "W" for MQn.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\File1.txt would indicate you're running it from system32 directory

Mqn is on disk "W" (W:\Mqn). There is something wrong with mqn.bat shortcut on desktop. When I run mqn.bat directly all is OK. Thank you btw.
Now I'm going to listen to all 2.72/3 versions... :)

Check the contents of the mqn.bat file.
Check if the cd-command at the beginning points to the directory where you have located the mqncontrol.exe, mqnplayer.exe and paste.exe files.
If it points to a different directory, correct it to the proper one

I tested a NAD M50 streamer today, an arm based streamer with buffering and thought it sounded like the mqn version I've just uploaded

2.73 1024 sq 0x8 raw background

ie there was more separation and the tones weren't as harsh

I'm sorry to disagree, but in my setup the best by far (!!!) is the 2.73 448 intel raw background, with lots of space and detail. Combined witha slight forwardness and directness of sound.

It's a shame though it will only play 44.1/16. Hope you can make version of this one that will also playback 24-bit music (a 32-bit container is OK for me).

What did you think of the NAD M50 itself?

Nigel

The latest 1024 sounded more recessed and somewhat flattened/dull, not as dynamic and open spatially.

My pro audio settings for the 448 are

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile\Tasks\Pro Audio]
"Scheduling Category"="High"
"GPU Priority"=dword:00000008
"Affinity"=dword:00000002
"Clock Rate"=dword:00005ab4
"SFIO Priority"="Normal"
"Priority"=dword:00000001
"Background Only"="True"
"Latency Sensitive"="True"
"BackgroundPriority"=dword:00000008

My timer resolution is 2 ms and my driver buffer is 2 ms as well.

A further note is that all my music is classical music: piano, violin, cello, cello + piano, string quartets, vocal, small vocal ensemble.
And I like to hear the space of the recording venue, so there has to be some reverb showing through. I do select my records on that aspect as well as I don't really like the old style flat recordings.

Cheers

Aleg

For me 2.73 1024 sq 0x8 raw background is the best Mqn version so far. Huge amount of details, great tonal balance, perfect bass - all is more than excellent.
