Karl Richter's version of Mozart's Requiem....
Not a great version IMHO; lacking in the requisite drama and passion.

Ferenc Fricsay was meant to record the Requiem for DG, but because of his untimely death the recording went to Richter. It is indeed a strict and rather Lutheran reading, missing the Catholic operatic fervor inherent in Mozart's music.

Vivaldi: Concerti per vari strumenti....
One of the attractive aspects of Vivaldi's music for me is the unusual combinations of instruments that are sometimes used. This CD is a case in point; really lovely.

Ann Hallenberg though more a mezzo than an alto, has a stupendous voice, and she is really good in this piece.

Faramondo isn´t one of Handel´s most popular operas, but it surely has some excellent music.
A few years ago Virgin recorded it with I Barocchisti and a stellar cast that included Max Emanuel Cencic, Philippe Jaroussky and Sophie Karthäuser. How can you compete with that? Well, the Göttingen Handel Festival can afford weeks of rehearsal for truly excellent productions. From the pictures in the booklet heaven knows what was going on on stage, but musically all is very fine. Mezzo Amily Fons is quite a discovery, an admirable singer that is a pleasure to hear, and even though there are no famous names in the cast, all are very good. This is a good alternative to the Virgin, mostly because they compliment each other, besides using a mezzo rather than a countertenor for the main role, it is recorded live, which I personally love in spite of the stage noises. So, this is recommended.

Glorious listening for a Friday evening in the form of Sandrine Piau's new recital for Naive. One of my favourite singers, Piau never disappoints and this recording is no exception. What I treasure about her singing is a profound sense of emotive delicacy allied with dramatic intensity and this Mozart recital is a beautiful expression of her art. Short measure at 48 minutes but not a note is wasted and everything here is communicated with intelligence and a depth of feeling that is intensely moving. A disc to set on repeat and savour.

Beginning the day's listening with A Solo, Paolo Pandolfo's recently reissued 1998 recording for Glossa. This is a wonderful listening experience, concentrating on solo repertoire for viola da gamba, communicated with a poetic sense of grace, nobility and utmost delicacy. At all times, Pandolfo retains a personal approach to this music that prioritises cerebral introspection and a subtly probing inquisitiveness over any kind of virtuosic display. Profoundly rewarding music-making from a master musician.
