What you are endeavouring to do Jared with the HIP and pre Hip is a very interesting exercise and one that both Darren and I indulge in for comparison purposes. I think that it is really enlightening to see the way taste and interpretations have (sometimes dramatically) changed.
Thank you, Fergus... we should take advice from others of course, however ultimately, we are responsible for our own listening development. Menuhin's Bach will certainly prove to be a contrast with Pinnock's austere HIP version, and as such I have been looking for this set (albeit half-heartedly) for some while, because it covers all the same works, but alas it is now OOP and I thought I had missed my chance.
I will just add that I wished to hear the Menuhin with the Pinnock in a similar way to the Richter with the Gardiner in the choral works... it's the same principle for me, and something I shall be embarking on at length within the coming months...
Do post your findings in due course Jared. I for one would be keenly interested.

Die Zauberflote (I have no real idea why, or I can't put it into words at least). I only have the Bohm and Gardiner recordings and I am very happy with those. Let us know what you think of Abbado's take (just in case it turns up in the local charity shop again!)

I am the same Darren....it is a work that I have always really liked. I made a very fine purchase last year with the Christie version. It can run quite expensive but if you can pick it up in one of you local trawls it is a very fine production with the usual Christie attention to detail!!

Gentlemen: Two more excellent purchases, courtesy of Great Uncle ebay...
and of course... the DVDs I managed to sell on Sunday, to finance them. Unfortunately, I'm slowly running out of spare DVDs and am going to have to think of something else I can start selling... :-//

In time, maybe it will click with me...
... at present, when I hear it, I just wish he'd spent his time writing a few more Piano Concertos...

^^ I am glad you're making the most of your profits Jared. The Schubert collection there is very special, and I am slightly envious of that Berlioz... ;-)

thanks, Darren... yes, the Berlioz was a very good price, esp considering it's now OOP. there are still a few pennies in the Paypal coffer (about £15), but I'm most pleased with the four purchases I have made on ebay, in exchange for my film money... the fourth being one I purchased late last night:

I had been hoping to sell my body on the streets of downtown King's Lynn on a Saturday night... but I couldn't find anyone to take it away...
