I'm sorry to hear that Dave, hopefully you wil not have back problems for too long. Best wishes with the new abode and I hope that you get your kit sorted quickly too.DaveF wrote:Unfortunately I gave myself quite a nasty lower back injury while trying to get a pair of 82kg speakers up two flights of stairs even though I had plenty of assistance. Anyway, hopefully by the weekend I'll have my stuff all connected back together.

Re: What are you listening to?
Beethoven – Violin Concerto played by Christian Tetzlaff and the Tonhalle Orchester Zurich/Zinman....
I recall some time ago Darren and I had a discussion about this violin concerto. I said that this was a work that I had difficulty coming to terms with; especially the long rambling first movement. Darren recommended this version to me as it had helped him to better understand the work.
Well it certainly did the trick for me as well! Zinman directs a superlative performance from both the soloist and the orchestra. There is nothing laboured here; the performance flows freely and expressively and one never tired of following the music no matter where it led, even in the long cadenza of the first movement as the soloist had me captivated and enthralled. The playing in the slow movement was ravishing. The performances seemed somewhat withheld in the final movement but were none the worse for that.
A highly recommended disc!

Alexander Glazunov
Symphony No. 7
BBC National Orchestra of Wales
Tadaaki Otaka - conducting
I have been listening to this recording every day now for the past two weeks, I really like it. The writing for and the playing by the woodwinds in the first and third movements is sublime and the sound of the Taffys is in stark contrast to their Russian counterparts on the rest of the symphonies in this set, warmly recommended.

Carl Nielsen
Symphony No. 3
Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra
Theodore Kuchar - conducting.
I really like this recording, however, it will not replace the Blomstedt/SFSO performance in my affections, it is well worth having though.

Leopold Mozart – 5 Sinfonias....
There is some charming music on this CD and the first two on the disc are particularly attractive as they contain some lovely brass textures.

Mozart – Sinfonia Concertante K364/Clarinet Concerto K622....
A most enjoyable disc and I particularly liked the performance of the Clarinet Concerto.

Finally got my hifi back in order and then treated myself to Symphony 3 from the above set.
