I have a number of them Seán and they are all wonderfull....extremely well played, well paced and they get to the essence of the music.

Not surprising I suppose as they have real pedigree as I understand that they are also members of the Concentus Musicus Wien.

I also have a few of those recordings and although I havent listened to them in a very long time I do remember that they were quite good.

No. 3 is probably my favourite and this version is a rich toned and powerful performance. The slow movement has a beautiful sense of pathos and longing which is not always present in other interpretations. The final movement is also dark and ominous with snarling brass and is richly rewarding.
No. 6 there is good weight to the strings and this extra body lends itself very well to this work. The contrasting brass in the 3rd movement is very appealing.

A recent acquisition:



Volume 9 of the Festetics Quartet's complete Haydn cycle. I listened to Op. 76 No. 1: this is very promising, full of spirit and animation. The recording is excellent too, I love the way you hear the bodies of the cello and viola ringing resonantly.

I got it as it was the period instrument recommendation in "Building a Library" for Op. 77 No. 2, Haydn's last completed quartet, and I was looking for period instrument Haydn quartets. I have plenty of the Quatour Mosaïques in Haydn, but they just don't speak to me. I'm looking forward to listening to more of this!
