A superb CD, coupling the extraordinary vocalised anguish of the Janáček quartets with the quartets of Szymanowski that recall Debussy and Bartok in their intermingling of post-Impressionism and folk-inspired Modernism.

An amazing work, Simon, that demands and rewards close listening. My favourite versions are the following ones.

John Field: Nocturnes played by John O’Conor....
....beautiful music as we know and beautifully played here. O’Conor’s beautifully light touch and infused feeling only enhance this music even further. This is a highly recommended performance.

Tonight's listening. First up was the Takacs Quartet's astonishing performances of the Bartok string quartets. Fiery, energising, endlessly inventive music in their definitive versions (perhaps challenged only by the Tokyo String Quartet on DG).
And then Andras Schiff's poetic rendering of the Janáček solo piano works. The more I hear this CD, the more firmly I believe it is one of Schiff's very finest achievements. Music born out of nostalgia here elevated to the heights of the noblest profundity.

Yes indeed; that one has been a favourite around here for quite some time....great music making!

Mine too, I also love the Vegh Quartet version, but for sheer technical excellent the Takacs is peerless.

Listening to this wonderful set this evening. The complete symphonies of the ceaselessly-inventive Vagn Holmboe on BIS. It's quite amazing that this man's work had been neglected for so long before BIS and dacapo started to record his music. One of the great composers of the 20th century.
