I was wondering what the clock frequencies are?
I just made a deal to buy a slightly used SDTrans over at diyaudio.
An ad came was posted this morning, and they almost never come up for sale used. I was the first to respond I guess.

I almost bought the ebay one, I was really close to pulling the trigger, and then this ad showed up this morning, and I couldn't resist.

Was looking at pics of the sd trans and i was wondering what all the ic chips are for just looks so cimplicated mine only got 3 doing anything important
Pretty impressed with the sound of it atm
Pity i couldnt rent a sdtrans for a week to compare it
But i supppose we can compare to pc front end

Its the problem once you get away from the mainstream audio devices, very hard to find ones to listen to, you have to go buy them if you want to try them.

The major SD Trans chips:
IC3 - control microprocessor
IC12 - FPGA
IC9 - firmware EPROM?
IC4 - converts single-end I2S to LVDS (for the PS-Audio styled I2S over HDMI)
IC6 - converts I2S to S/PDIF
IC7 - I2S output driver
The others are all regulators.
Your ebay SD card reader appears to have an FPGA or microprocessor, a display driver and the AK4118 which does the digital signal decoding and codex conversions. In the SDTrans, what that AK4118 does is shared between the FPGA, and IC6 & IC7.
I do like your find. What clocks are you using again? At that price, I may have to get one to play with.

I detect nothing missing in the midrange. I am hearing things I had not heard before so I guess that means something. The high frequencies, as with the low, are much cleaner - much less hashiness.
The thing just keeps getting better and better.
Wish I could go ahead and battery power the clock separately NOW! And if adolfo.a.aguiar tells me turn on sequence is not critical I will do that tonight. HAve all of my battery/regulator modules ready to install And the relays were just delievered ecen though I hope I do not need to use them.
My only regret is not having purchased one of these things years ago. I think of the time I wasted screwing around with WINDOWS and computers ... not that I did not enjoy it in a very perverse way but I could have been so much further along.
Have not put any orchestral music on a card yet, listening only to pop music, but the gap is narrowing each day between phonograph and digital - for pop, it is a toss up - they are both good in different ways. I could be perfectly happy with the SDTrans and SOEKRIS for pop.
Waiting for some more disks to arrive for the orchestral records.

From the picture on page 1, I think IC1 is the I2S to LVDS converter, since it is right next to the HDMI connector (unless I am looking at it incorrectly)gstew wrote: The major SD Trans chips:

So, it seems you should be able to remove IC1 (or 4 the LVDS converter), and IC6 at least. This assumes you only use I2S directly from the SDTrans.
I might also try bypassing IC7, and see if it sounds better without IC7. If so, you could remove that part also.
