Also, JC: I noticed when going through the Windows Optimization page of Shan's PC Audio Blog (XA programmer) that he explicitly recommends Visual Studio Professional and not Ultimate - he says Ultimate has "too much junk." Why do you recommend Ultimate?

thx for the information. professional is better.
i actually swtiched to vs2012 pro in my win2012. but on my win7, i use vs2013 pro.

the whole point is having ms C++ 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012.... installed correctly. you can try install express version if you think pro is too big.

note: pkshan says you must keep .net on win7. but on win2012, it already has .net. so, you can uninstall the .net.

you need installation disk. i am not sure.

type devmgmt.msc in command prompt. tell me what you get.
You need to add a disclaimer as a signature that all these 'tweaks' you mention are for your edification alone and not for others to implement without risk to their PC. You don't explain your 'tweaks' thoroughly and you don't even have your gear displayed in your signature. Maybe you should spend more time testing out your tweaks thoroughly first before posting or change the thread title to 'optimization diary'.
for wushuliu, i am sorry. i forgot to tell you it was for win2012 only. what went wrong there anyway? you never report.

think minionas made a mistake.none of those tweak deletes device manager. i have device manager.

from now on, people, all these tweaks are tested for at least a week on my win2012 using admin. don't get pissed off on me you don't know what you doing. also please backup! use ghost or something.

Great! Let me know what you find...

Have you tried pkshan's "foobar Clock XA"? It appears to be some sort of foobar mod that he's engineered to improve the PC's overall audio clock (I guess sort of similar to ReClock?) - anyway, I'm trying it out today and think it makes a good overall SQ boost, at least with YouTubes - haven't tried with my headphone rig yet, though. Also not sure if I'm doing it right... he supplies a 10 second 24/44 WAV file to "play" in the clock's exe, which he instructs you to double click to "play" in his Readme txt, but it just says "Stopped" after "starting."

Here's the link for anyone interested:

yes. it is useful for directsound, waveout etc. doesn't work for waspi, asio etc non-shared channel.
yes. you need to non-stop playing the 24/44 wav file. it will have some effect on youtube, gaming, foobar for example.

hey internethandle
in this scvhost registry thing, i notice reducing the fontprint of vm/hyper-v helps SQ a good deal. for you luckily win7 has no vm. it just proves you are spot on, even though my hyper-v is disabled, it still has an effect on SQ because of scvhost. however, the tweak introduces some earaches, still trying figure out how to fix it.

I never said any complains to anyone after applying any of possible tweaks posted here, as i perfectly understand that the risk is mine personally. I'm glad that people share their findings, which take so much time to discover and i can try it too with less time spent.

---TWEAK 25---
advanced user only. for those who is willing to experiment. different for different setup.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Svchost

the goal is to reduce fontprint of svchost. you might have disabled or deleted a service. that service can still reside in svchost.

rule number 1
don't delete any key or value! however, you can edit value.

rule number 2
only remove a service if you know that it will never run and no other service depends on it. in my case, hyper-v, .. etc

if SQ didn't increase, restore your registry backup.

if you do it right, the SQ change is noticeable. if you do it wrong, the SQ is noticeably worse off.

why not just take down everything?
for example, i have tried to delete everything related to hyper-v within the entire registry and hyper-v drivers in c drive. doesn't work. SQ drops.
*hyper-v is integrated service, it ruins your SQ as soon as you start using win8/2012/R2/8.1
