You have my sympathy :(

Anyone who mods has been there, hooked something up wrong, or accidentally shorted something, and then spark and smoke. And then you want to cry or scream or ...

I know it sucks, you built a beautiful PC, but you can get a replacement MB, and then reuse everything else.

Thanks Randy,

It sucks because I finally finished and got ready to enjoy it!
Now reordering the mobo from PPA and wait again for who knows how long! Arrrrrrrrr........

There is a joke about the guy who just bought the Iphone 6, put in he's back pocket and seat in the car.
When he heard cracking, he just said "O God, I hope that was my back"!
So, yeah, that's the exact feeling!!!

yes it is really frustrating i can certainly vouch for that

im not sure using a crocodile clip jumper lead to carry the signal was a good idea
it could be why it didnt work

the xo board should be mounted on the mobo directly

single mobo clock isnt usually too problematic

Hi Adam, I hear your pain but from someone who has also smoked a lot of Mobo's I can tell you the clock mod is one of the easier ones to carry out yourself if you do not want to wait for the PPA Mobo.
Order a standard Mobo from a local vendor and do it yourself if you feel ready for a challenge.... after you have blown the first board it is never as painful after that :-))

I have done it many times now and never had it go bad, it was always the memory power mod that used to catch me out until I came up with a foolproof way of doing it by "crunching" the choke and using the existing soldered point with the choke leg for connection.

For the Clock mod I always turn the Mobo upside down with a small clamp on the original clock to act as a weight while I apply solder on the back and wait for it to drop to the floor.
Applying a pool of solder across both pins the clock drops out pretty quick....its just a matter of applying enough heat to the pin for the new connection and a little solder on the back after it pushes through and you are good to go.
Cheers, Pearse.

Adam
Pearse is right
Just grt the same mobo and pop the crystal out
If you use plenty of flux and solder it will just fall out

If I bought the mobo myself, tried to replace clock and mobo smoked, that was a good the risk to be taken and easier to accept.
But, I'm pissed because I had everything running AND DONE, than little devil came and say "o, maybe you should also try this way...go, go"!!!

Thanks for the suggestion to take out the clock myself, but I have not much experience with that kind of stuff and really no clue what I will be doing!

I already asked PPA and he said that the same mobo is discontinued and in couple of days he will let me know. I would like the same one so everything else fit and I don't have to redo the rest.

I have one more hope!
Since I shorted the place were the clock was connected for the 5v, I will try to give direct 5v from my PS and see if anything changes.

It is quite possible you blew USB +5v
It would be a good idea to try external 5v

Do not be afraid to take out a crystal if you apply enough heat solder and flux it really just falls out

What mobo is ppa selling now?

I actually never asked PPA what is he selling now, I just asked for the same one.

I still don't understand, after the crystal falls out......what than? What I'm gonna put instead?!

Just for the record and in case that little devil came again, are this connections the way is says? Is that your final answer? :) :)
Even the black dot is visible on the clock corner.
