when windows is good all things has become good, didn't detect any defect of soundstage, balance, even make compare with other players. all players are good, damn...
have intersting testing method, JC. you may try it.
lets laptop battarey go down to ~30%, don't use adapter charge, when all things of sound become bad, very bad, so make compare beween different players. almost all sofware players have issue with soundstage and balance, hehe...
have seen most stable is foobar2000 v1.0.3, seems balance changed ~0.01%. many other players cannot keep it, left and right channels has become disbalance, very bad.
v2.4.3 is winner of lekt's versions, v2.5.1 s8 also good. i used bad recording of 1973 year, my favorite songs, rip from tape. more difficult detect defect of good recordings. concluse: test when windows is very bad easily detect defect.
but i think your OS always good with many tweaks, hehe...

yes... very true.
i have many tweaks that maximize the resolution. i don't use.
when resolution is high, and when jitter comes, balance very easy to go wrong.

in daily use, i actually deliberately use bad tweaks, to lower the resolution, to balance all 3 frequencies.
this method means:
more jitters = more blur/mellow/soft. but all 3 frequencies are ok balance. so soundstage doesn't go wrong.
so, i can have many programs running, i can still enjoy music.

i think my OS is ok balance.
when OS is balance, good and bad software is very easy to detect.
mqn.exe2.82 is now way better than mqn2.71. soundstage no longer all over the place. very tidy. 2.71 soundstage hasn't improved at all, just changes. negative negative makes a positive i think. resolution is higher, but music isn't correct=incorrect soundstage. "Just Good Music" is totally true for mqn.exe2.82.

same result for xa, when OS is imbalance, xa900>xa1030>xa1070. when OS is balance, xa1070>xa1030>xa900.
(notice new version has higher resolution=more difficult to stable!)

relistening to many old versions, trying to find those make good music.

2.78.1 raw sounds fine today!
(started using 0.5ms. learning the new sound. very easy to make bad judgement)

yes, 2.78.1 raw version have good bass, think depth OK. only little imbalance. its sound have many good things.

yes... i usually find a jitter, and fix it.
now the mid is strainless, intenseless.
very difficult to tweak/tune.

need to change testing method. moving to upper treble, upper upper treble.
i hear clear differences between software players. all sounds wrong to me. must be my OS haha

can get "true" quality of sound when OS is worst!

detect jitters, cheap equipments is enough
detect good sound, $$$ plsss

raw versions is less strain than non-raw.

non-raw seems cleaner/airy but strained. not true. cannot make richer airy treble.

or 2.75.1 s8?

i like s8 too.
s4 is very stable. very very rich sound + clean + airy.
