Noted Barry re porcelain glaze. I picked and alternative €30 unit in amazon a very nice stainless steel tin.
See link below.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Master-Class-Ro ... 874&sr=1-2

That with a nice teak or mahogany base(breadboard) and lavardin better beware.

It really is a fantastic job Fran well done, I dont think you realise how good you are at this.

I did a little more with this tonight..... a few more mods based on advice from other builders. While my implementation isn't optimised (waiting on parts), there already is an improvement in sound.

I've been trying to figure whats making this amp sound sooooo good. It seems to me that the thing thats grabbing me every time is what I'd call "presence".... that impression of absolute realism. Its actually kinda freaky to be honest.

it might be any number of things...

-simply a good match-up with your speakers (have you tried it with the quads yet?)
-is the iron in the amp a vintage set? i know of certain fanboys that insist on one maker, and production run over another)
-it might be the EL84's themselves; they're known to have a silky midrange and crisp high notes, much more than, say, EL34's. (manly Stingrays are highly regarded for this)
-the valves you have? (i'm not even gonna touch valve rolling!)
-which caps and resitors...
-or maybe, just maybe, the tesco roast pan? and such good deals at tesco.

-or you're just some freaky-good amp builder that made a pact with the devil and i've been meaning to tell you for years that that glint in your eye makes me nervious.

Fran, I'm going to have to borrow another of your creations at some stage.

Any plans to build a 40W+ valve amp with silky highs and gobs of "presence"? Preferably with tight bass and pinpoint imaging...??
