This is a slippery slope that you are teetering above right now Fergus. Given your love of non-classical music, there will be no going back if you go down this path. Well well worth the effort though.
I am only too aware of this aspect of my decision Dave....but what can you do?????

I thought that you might be pleased Dermot!
On the selection (and there are really not too many of them) some that stand out in the non classical area are quite a few of the Beatles albums which I know were from the early '60's as they were given to me by an uncle who emigrated to Canada. They were well played when I got them and I played them to death when I was a teenager learning to play the guitar so they would not be in great nick.

I.suppose you might need a cleaner as well!

Surprisingly Fran, some of the samples that I looked at randomly were in close to pristine condition!

A very big thank you to Fran, Johnny and Ciaran; I will get back to each of you individually in the near future.
I deliberately did not mention a budget because I honestly have absolutely no idea in relation to this market....I would basically be starting from scratch all over again! Hence my original request for suggestions and recommendations.

I have always had a hankering for a LP12. Saw a lovely black version recently. Havent a clue what the arm and other bits are but loved the look and they have a great reputation. Best of luck on the hunt fergus. The bank balance will drop significantly when you start replacing all your cd's. The clearaudio concept gets great press reveiws and I think Cloney's are selling it in their sale for circa €1K. It seems to be idiot proof and not require much tinkering which to be honest I would prefer. I havent a clue if it would be superior to lp12 or just different to it.

My budget would not come remotely close to that Tony so I don't have to worry about that particular comparison. I keep telling myself that I only really want some kind of entry level model because I just want to listen to what I already have....I certainly do not want to go down the road of replacing my CDs that's for sure!!!

Fergus I have a pioneer pl300 direct drive TT that you are welcome to use. It might need a stylus. Its lying around somewhere gathering dust.
I certainly have no use for it for the forseeable future i.e a long time
