I'm sure someone here will donate a kidney to t he cause!!
Massimo, many thanks for your input. Things have moved on a bit, but without any purchase.
I have a few units here and have been putting them through there paces. Thanks Fran.
The clear leader and by quite a way is a 40+ year old set of Stax with SRD-7 energiser. Again thanks Fran.
The sound quality from these things is incredible.
I've been listening to Sennheiser 555's and 650's I've had a go at AKG 701s' and a couple of others not worth mentioning and the Stax are just in another league.
I know I stated that "I like the idea of a built in Dac and the versatility of...a preamp.... having channels crossfeed " all well and good,
but the sound quality of the Stax earspeakers is something I've very rarely come across.
I'm at present doing a bit of research...

Hah! That'll be the kind of research that hurts in the pocket area!

Remember them. tried them many moons ago. Frans also. Some guy on the wigwam site has a top of the range set for sale. You need to buy them for Tirnahifi! Stax are fantastic and probably the way to go if you are in to long term headphone listening. I gave them back to Fran simply because they sat unused.
I could see how AKG's might disappoint a bit if you got in to the stax sound. Your musical taste really suits Stax anyway Derek.

I now have a loan of yet another unit, a Cayin HA-1A. Tony you might have a bit to say about this thing.
Adrian had been visiting our friends in Cloney Audio and mentioned my newest search, he was subsequently dispatched with this loaner for me to play with.
We hooked it up last night just as a pre-amp and it worked very well out of the box. So I've yet another bit of comparison to do.
I looked at that the add on wigwam, v/nice...

Really liked that amp Derek. What are Cloneys pricing it at? Will dig up the reviews when I have a bit more time.
Sure you know it can run in ultralinear or triode mode and has a variable switch for different impedance headphones.
Great thing is you can tube roll also.

This was the review that put me on the trail of the Cayin. It had been suggested by Fryderck.
