on the PC front.....
does the PC matter when it's a media server as opposed to media player?

It matters if you believe bespoke implementations make a difference. Convenience is a Nas drive remote wirelessly/wired feeding various points around a house from one hard drive source. You still have to get the file to the player and on to the dac. If 0's and 1's are irrelevant sure anything will do. Squeezebox sonos whatever and it will work fine. A bit like any aspect of life it only matters if it bothers you enough to go to whatever lengths you deem required to make it work right for you.

it only arose as a question when I discovered that Apple doesn't do UPnP
My recent acquisition of the naim uniti exposed that flaw in my mac mini which had been my itunes server and as it's only PowerPC it can't run a huge chunk of the new software.
to that end I'm looking at NAS vs a small form factor pc to act as media server (the attraction of a computer over a NAS being I can still airplay to the av setup, Zeppelin and office system....
