I currently run Ubuntu 14.04, on an i5 Nuc.
It is so quick and easy to use ;)
I have also run Vortexbox, mpd, daphile..... for music duties (on my dedicated MATX PC).
These offerings are dedicated music only OS's.
In my experience I have found Linux to be a "decent" OS for music playback.... (but not excellent)
Personally, I found Vortexbox much more dynamic than windows/MQN......
However MQN/Win8 provided more detail, insight and far less grain (especially through the midrange freq's).
Maybe a truly optimised software player (Line MQN for Linux) is the only difference, separating Linux from MQN windows... ?! Personally, I would also try Vortexbox, or Daphile in direct HW mode via a USB to Spdif converter.
Vortexbox is simple to install and the user interface and supportive control apps are plenty (and excellent)
I must say the newest version of Ubuntu is super easy to use.... gone are the days of utilising terminal for basic tasks.
