Personally I am against the split-up of the general forum .. Two reasons ..
a) There will be lots of sections with very little activity [e.g. look at the general section and count the number of posts on (say) tuners or (say) power distribution boards]
b) Posts will get lost that involve two sections [e.g. where do you post 'What amp should I use with x speakers ?' Does this go under amps or speakers].

I'm easy either way but if the General section is to be split up I propose 4 areas.
Sources: Covers all CDPs/TT's/Tuners.
Speakers and Amps
Cables
Home Cinema
This will make future searches a lot easier. When I lwas looking for TT recomendations a while back, I had to route around god knows how many pages in the current General section and the interesting posts were split wide over mutliple pages.
Of course, a split will leave the problem of what to do the current General section posts.
Very disappointing with the low number of votes and feedback.

finding threads and lost information is most of the problem
if i remember a thread 12mts ago that i wanted some info of its damn hard to find it
sections will help the search parameters
if i wanted to find out about speaker cables, interconnects etc etc in a broad sort of way i could go to the relevant section just to have a browse
it doesnt really need to disturb anything "unanswered posts" and "active topics" are probably the most used and that doesn't need to change
there is nothing bad to come out of having categories and subcategories as the day to day stuff can remain the same

Fully agree with Nige.
The more categories the better in my view. It will be just easier to find information and I cannot see how it would interfere with number of posts.
I would go for full split, so section for each category like speakers, amplification, analogue, cables. I would even split DACs from rest of digi sources.
I am new member and because current layout of the forum I only focus on currently made content because there is no sections to browse and It is too big of mishmash of information and threads in general section to make my self go through more then last few pages of it. I am sure there is plenty of interesting read in General part, just not in the form inviting to discover it, when you want just to browse in search for some interesting random stuff in oppose to using search function to find something particular.

I'm all for a reasonable number of sub categories. Speakers/amps (broken down into pre, power and integrated)/ CDPs/ TTs/cables/furniture etc.
I'm sure if we look at our CD or vinyl collections there's a logical arrangement so we can find something when we want it? I generally go alphabetically by genre..... if I didn't it would take too long to find an album I want NOW! The same is true if I'm trying to track down a post about a particular topic or an advertisement for specific hardware...
Really there should be more overlap from the newer guys involved the computer audio forum.... presumably they like music too ;)
