Slayer! Academy 12th June. A rare opportunity to see them in such a small venue (they usually play the O2).

KINKY FRIEDMAN’S BIPOLAR TOUR GOES GLOBAL!

Texas’ beloved singer-songwriter, once and future politician
and animal rescuer coming to Europe.

AUSTIN, Texas — Is Kinky Friedman, self-proclaimed author, columnist, musician, beautician and governor of the heart of Texas, really bipolar? Though this is likely a question for a higher authority or licensed professional, Kinky Friedman’s Bipolar World Tour seeks the answer, as it comes to Europe in April and May. Kinky will perform solo shows throughout Scandinavia, England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Holland, Germany and Austria. It will be one of Kinky’s most extensive tours ever. The Kinkster will be running on pure adrenalin, which creates an almost Judy Garland-like rapport with his audiences.

The Bipolar World Tour is nothing if not a fact-finding mission, as Kinky calculates international political views, particularly toward the Kinkster himself. For Kinky is considering a second run for Texas governor. After a plethora of international gaffes by Texas’ Rick Perry, one of America’s least popular sitting governors, the Kinkster will bring a fresh view of Texas politics with him across the pond. Pollsters and the Kinky-ites believe he can win this time. Most Texans already know who is the true governor of the heart of Texas.

Aside from his pending political rebirth, Kinky is both energized and excited about all things Kinky, not least of which is his book written with Willie Nelson, Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die. Kinky’s extensive forward and full-on collaboration with Willie has gotten the publishing world’s attention - it has been on the New York Times Top Ten best sellers list since before the holidays and promises to be one of the top sellers of the winter season. As a result, a deal has been struck for the return of Kinky’s intrepid and extremely popular fictional detective . . . himself, with a new two-book deal. The first will hit the stands by year’s end.

Kinky will be hawking a new live solo CD, Live From Woodstock, recorded on the American leg of the Bipolar Tour and featuring some of his best work ever. Live From Woodstock will be released to Euro Americana radio in February. Live From Woodstock is not the only CD about which Kinky is excited. Rising star roots performer Jesse Dayton has recorded an entire album of Kinky’s songs (Jesse Sings Kinky), which is already getting major attention at Americana radio. It currently sits at #8 on the Euro play chart. Dayton has also been starring as Kinky in road productions of Becoming Kinky, by the prize-winning playwright Ted Swindley, who created the world smash Always — Patsy Cline. Also on tap in 2013: a Russian film based on Kinky’s non-detective novel, Kill Two Birds and Get Stoned. Filming has already begun.

But this April and May it’s all about being with the people, performing for the people and listening to the people. BiPolar? It’s all relative. Let the villagers of the world be the judge. If they end up convincing Kinky to jump into politics again, Texans will rejoice, and so will the rest of the planet. Meanwhile, Kinky remains the Jewish Troubadour of our times, with a show for the ages.

I saw Lucinda Williams supporting Mary Chapin Carpenter back in the glory days of Midnight at the Olympia. Lucinda Willaims and her band were great, but the highlight was when Mary Chapin Carpenter opened her set acoustically with a song about a blind orphan being run over by the last train from New Orleans, or whatever. After she finished there was polite applause and silence until someone shouted "That's not Karen Carpenter!"
That was brilliant :)
