Re: Wanted - amplifier & cd

Therein lies the question! Speakers and amps, in my understanding, have evolved fairly slowly (with the possible exception of class-D) over the last number of years. This means that you can pick up high end quality (like your speakers) at a fraction of their cost new, and at a level of performance only a fraction behind that of current models (in most cases; I’m talking generalities and mid range here)
The issue with cd playback, and it’s an upgrade that I am considering at present, but on a limited budget having just bought a new house, is that it evolving at a massive pace. Originally I considered buying a new cd player, but the more I think about it the more I think I’ll be better served maintaining my cdp as a transport and investing in a DAC with a good USB input stage to facilitate some computer based audio and making my major investment in a turntable.
These two areas (computer and vinyl) seem to be the growth areas at the moment and I feel that the combination is one we audiophiles (whether on unlimited budgets or constrained ones) can benefit from.
I see myself listening to computer audio in general, on a day to day basis. The ability to control it all from your pocket is awesome (in its original sense) to me. Then for the glass of wine comfy chair moments, the tactile experience of putting a 180g pressing on a piece of mechanical engineering appeals to my sense of occasion and ceremony. Not to mention that the majority of TT’s are far better looking than any CD player!
Sorry didn’t mean to hijack your thread, but the whole “is a new cd player better than an old cd player with a new dac ?” question has been knocking around in my head for ages!
